The beginning of the national team
The selection of the Tunisian football team has already existed before independence, specifically since 1928. At first, the team has made friendly matches against regional and international teams. It benefited from its first victory in 1939 against the team of amateur players in Paris.
The official meeting after independence took place on June 1, 1957 with the team from Algeria. The Tunisian Football Federation was created on March 29, 1957. It joined the CAF or Confederation of African Football and affiliated to FIFA or International Federation of Football Association in 1960. Since the creation of the national football team of Tunisia, Sadok Sassi, aka Attouga, is the most selected goalkeeper and Issam Jemâa is the top scorer.
Results and palmares of Carthage Eagles
The Tunisian team made its first international match on June 2, 1957 against the Libyan team. It came out victorious on the score of 4 to 2. Since then, the Eagles of Carthage have played 632 games against teams A and 41 games against B selections or Olympic teams. During the African Nations Championship (CHAN), they made 20 matches.
The most outstanding team victories took place on August 18, 1960 in a game against Taiwan with 7 points difference (8-1), and against Togo on September 17, 2000 (7-0). Nevertheless, the Carthage Eagles suffered some defeats, the heaviest of which was noted in the match against the Hungarian football team on the score of 1 to 10. This was a friendly match made on July 20, 1960 in Budapest (Hungary). The Tunisian national football team has arrived five times in the World Cup finals and in the first round in 1978, 1998, 2002 and 2006. It has reached the finals of the African Cup of Nations 18 times and is African gold medalist in 2004. It was also able to pass two finals in the African Nations Championship and ended up winning the African Gold Medal in 2011.
The current situation of Tunisian football
The selection of the Tunisian national football team is under the direction of Nabil Maâloul since April 2017. He is an international footballer, who started to play football at the age of 6 years. After some disappearances during the last editions of the World Cup, the national team of Tunisia qualified for the 2018 edition.
Regarding club management, Tarek Bouchamaoui has joined FIFA as a member of the board since 2015. Apart from the business world, he has a passion for football. His dream is to raise the level of African competitions. He wants to give Africa the opportunity to succeed in the world of football. Tarek Bouchamaoui, a former football player from Tunisia, became a member of the FIFA Board of Directors from 2017 to 2021 and a member of the CAF Executive Committee. He was the chairman of the CAF referees committee (2011 - 2013).
